The requirement applies to designated representatives overseeing work execution for a company holding a construction contractor’s license.

Currently, it is mainly general contractors (subcategories 1.2, 1.3, 1.1.1, and 1.1.2) who must complete 16 hours of continuing education every two years.
⚠️ Specialized contractors are not targeted at this time.

Un entrepreneur général doit compléter 16 heures de formation continue reconnue par la RBQ à chaque période de deux ans et ce, depuis le 1er avril 2022. Nous appelons ces 24 mois la “période de référence”.

The current reference period runs from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026.

The next period will begin on April 1, 2026, and will then renew every two years.

You must complete your hours before the end of each period to maintain your license active.

💡 Tip: If you complete more than 16 hours during one period, up to 4 extra hours can be carried over to the following period. Any hours beyond that limit will not be recognized.

You can carry over up to 4 surplus hours to the next reference period, provided these hours were completed and reported before the end of the current period. Beyond 4 hours, the surplus is not retained.

The carried-over hours will appear in your RBQ file at the beginning of the next period.

If you obtained your RBQ license during the current reference period, your 16 hours of continuing education must be completed during the next reference period and for every subsequent period.

CONCRETE EXAMPLE:

  • You obtain your license on February 1, 2025.
  • Your continuing education requirement will begin on April 1, 2026, at the start of the next reference period.
  • You will then have until March 31, 2028, to complete your 16 hours of recognized training.

Thus, a license issued during the current reference period is considered “complete”: the study hours completed to obtain your license are already counted for this period. Therefore, all general contractors who obtained their license between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2026, must complete their 16 hours of continuing education between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2028.
